Wine Cellar Planning Guide: From Idea to Finished Room
1. Define the goal
Decide whether the room is for long term aging, everyday drinking, display, or a mix. This decides whether you need full climate control.
2. Pick the location
Basements and interior rooms with no exterior walls or windows are easiest to keep stable. Rooms next to a garage, attic, or sunny wall are harder.
3. Count bottles
Estimate your current collection and how much it may grow. Racking capacity is usually planned with room to expand.
4. Choose cooling
Choose between through the wall, ducted, and split systems based on noise, where heat can go, and budget.
5. Build the envelope
Framing, vapor barrier, insulation, door, and finishes come before racking.
6. Install racking, lighting, and finish
Racking, LED lighting, and flooring go in last, followed by a test period to confirm temperature and humidity hold steady.
